Abstract

Mining industries have high importance on global economy, especially on Brazilian economy, which was the sector that had positive balance in 2014. The nickel ores has different kinds of metals, and used sulfuric acid to make these metals soluble. Among the techniques that may be used for the treatment to recovery metals of interest - liquor -, the ion-exchange process presents an alternative to be explored due to its selectivity and low cost. At the same time, the presence of iron in its most oxidized form becomes a problem since it can precipitate easily due its high concentration. The precipitation of iron may decrease the resin efficiency, which can impregnate the resin. Other problem of precipitation of iron is that others metals precipitate with it (coprecipitation). The purpose of this project is to evaluate the influence of a reducing agent on nickel laterite's sulfuric liquor in the ion-exchange process. The batch experiments using a chelating resin will be performed in three steps: using liquor containing Fe(III); using the liquor after reducing process by using a reducing agent; and using liquor prepared with Fe(II). To evaluate the quantity of metals in the resin, the solution will be analyzed using chemical analyses available to use to this kind of analyses at research group expert on hydrometallurgical process at University of British Columbia. From these tests, it will be determined if the presence of a reducing agent has influence on the ion-exchange process.
