The development of products and green processes is one of the most important challenges of the present society. During the last 20 years Green Chemistry has played an increasingly important role in various sectors, in academia, industry, regulatory agencies as well as other governmental organizations around the world. In Brazil several activities involving the concepts of Green Chemistry have been carried out since the middle of the 1990s. In 2006, the 26th Summer School, of the Chemistry Department of the Federal University of São Carlos was focused on Green Chemistry with the participation of national and internationally recognized scientists in the field. In 2009, the project "Sustainable Education and Environmental Development in Latin American" was initiated, sponsored by IUPAC and coordinated by Professors Patricia Vazquez and Vânia Zuin. The aim of this project was to disseminate the green chemistry philosophy in Latin American countries. In the same year, the first book in Portuguese containing the concepts of Green Chemistry was edited by Correa and Zuin, which received the coveted bronze Jabuti Prize by the Câmara Brasileira do Livro. The 4th International IUPAC Conference on Green Chemistry (4th ICGC) was organized in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, from 25th to 29th August, 2012, with the theme "Exchanging experiences towards a sustainable society taking care of natural resources in their socio-economic development". The 4th ICGC attracted 600 participants from around 40 countries of all continents, encompassing all the areas of Chemistry and their related fields, represented by academia, industry, government and Chemical Societies worldwide.For the period of 2010-2012, according to the Web of Science database (Thomson Reuters), more than 200 scientific papers were published by Brazilian research groups: the main areas being Analytical Chemistry and Organic Synthesis, with 68 and 83 publications, respectively. These publications address several Green Chemistry concepts but the most common underlying theme has been alternative energy input in enhancement of chemical processes, especially microwave irradiation, which garners 69% of the total.
