Cinema, the street and the automobile in Rio de Janeiro (1907-1911)

Abstract

In this project we intend to research the relations between cinema, the street and the automobile in the city of Rio de Janeiro, from 1907 to 1911. The research objects in which these three elements are present are: the cinematographic simulators of Auto-Tours trips and Automobile-Cinema, the National Exhibition of 1908, the Automobile Parades, the São Gonçalo Circuit and the homonymous film from 1909. Aiming to reconstruct a relevant context for the comprehension of our objects and the relations between them, we intend to articulate historical sources research and filmic analysis with another two elements. The first will be the discussion on chronicles written by literary figures of the time worried with the urban transformations of Rio de Janeio (Figueiredo Pimentel, Olavo Bilac, Artur Azevedo and João do Rio). The second element are newspaper articles and illustrations published at the time (Fon Fon! and Careta!). (AU)
