Abstract

The purpose of this project is to analyze the village of São Paulo, in Portuguese America, and the town of Asuncion, viceroyalty of Peru, from the perspective of connected history, between 1640 and 1680. The Union of Iberian crowns between 1580 and 1640, during which Portugal and Spain were subject to an unique monarch was central to structuring the settlement in the region. The village of São Paulo, formally established in 1560, would have their bases settled during the Philippine period. However, the period after the Restauração of 1640 in which occurs the separation between Portugal and Spain is important to understand the relationship of integration between the two portions in America. From the resumption of the political divide in America, we intend comprehend the circulation circuits between these two locations, notably the flow of knowledge, the economic output and circulation of political elites. The purpose is to understand the region from logic of integration and not separation, by analyzing the São Vicente and Paraguayan structures connected way.
