In 2016, the city of Rio de Janeiro became host of one of the major sports events in the world, the XXXI Olympiad. Its great impact in urban and architectural transformations has presented an important theme for several researchers in different disciplines. Nonetheless, the literature review on Olympic legacy points out a gap in olympic urban design related studies - mainly regarding the relationship between physical and social space. The legacy is often assessed in economic, political, environmental or macro-urban-planning terms. Therefore, this PhD proposal envisages the analysis of urban design strategies applied in three main Olympic sites in Rio de Janeiro in the main Olympic cluster of Barra da Tijuca: the Olympic Park, the Athletes' Village and the Athletes' Park. The assessments aim to evaluate how their legacy relates to the urban space and the city. As a methodology, this research compares these projects' achievements in urban design in relation to London 2012 Olympic projects, as well as to contemporary urban design trends and standards suggested by field specialists. Following aspects are evaluated in these analyses: i) public participation; ii) method of selecting urban design projects; iii) relation between urban design theories' state of the art and projects developed; iv) relation between projects and the city; and, finally; v) relation between public and private powers in project implementation. This research's thesis is that alterations in the original urban planning/urban design masterplan for Barra da Tijuca's Olympic Park have undermined the leaving of an original legacy in urban design terms by Rio 2016 Olympics. This has happened in face of the flexibility demanded by contractors along with a gap in the Brazilian bidding law (Law no. 8666, from June, 21, 1993) in regulating projects' implementation according original designs.
