Abstract

This project develops an analytical framework to understand housing policies in their multiple social, political, economic, territorial, and subjective dimensions. Drawing from a quanti-qualitative research design, and from comparative data collected in the cities of Porto Alegre and São Paulo, this project scrutinizes the socioeconomic stratifications and perceptions of beneficiaries of Brazil´s largest housing initiative, the Minha Casa Minha Vida program. Data was assembled through questionnaires executed in January 2017 as part of a research project conducted at the Center for Metropolitan Studies. Questions to be tackled are twofold: how do people connect and critically assess the institutional design and implementation of a social housing policy? How do they reconceptualize their lives in tandem with their new housing units? A quanti-qualitative approach-e.g. one that considers temporal and transversal rifts-on public policies and their various scales of governance, is fundamental to the understanding the role of intervention technologies on people's lives.
