Has 'Enemy' changed into a friend? Guillermo Divito's influences in the Péricles Maranhão's graphic humor

Abstract

This project aims to present the reasons that lead us to request financial assistance from FAPESP: 1) to conduct in loco research on two rare comic book collections in Argentina, one at the Mariano Moreno National Library in Buenos Aires, and another in the Documentation Center of the Major Library of the National University of Córdoba; 2) to exchange with the Group of Investigators of Humor (GIH) of the National University of Córdoba, to discuss research on graphic humor and development of projects/plans/work partnerships of a scientific nature. The survey is necessary in order to have access to the originals of the series "Enemigos del Hombre", by Guillermo Divito, published in the weekly magazine Patoruzú from 1936 to mid-1940, as well as specific works that deal with the theme. Such stories are unpublished in Brazil and difficult to access even in Argentina, which reiterates the need to carry out this survey on the spot. The interest in this content is justified by the fact that they were the influencers of the creation of the character "O Amigo da Onça", by the Brazilian Péricles Maranhão. Published in Brazil in the second half of last century, the stories of this character were printed weekly in the pages of the extinct magazine O Cruzeiro and helped to make popular the expression that titled the series. We understand that "O Amigo da Onça", one of the most important and popular figures of the Brazilian graphic humor of that time, also influenced the crystallization of the stereotype of the filthy in the country. This premise, as well as the roots of the emergence of the character, integrates a postdoctoral project developed, without a scholarship, in the Postgraduate Program in Linguistics and Portuguese Language of the Paulista State University "Júlio de Mesquita Filho", Faculty of Sciences and Letters, Campus Araraquara.
