Abstract

The aplacophorans are mollusks known by having an elongated body and covered by spicules (also known as sclerites). One of its two gruops, the Caudofoveata, is characterized by not having foot and the presence of oral disc on anterior region. They are characteristics of great ocean depths and in some regions may be ecologically dominants and important in structure of benthic communities. On the other hand, as other deep sea mollusks, the Caudofoveata very little known about diversity, taxonomy, ecology and biogeography, especially for South Atlantic Ocean. Recently, a large sample of Caudofoveata was made in Notheastern coast of Brazil, a particular region on Atlantic Southwest, since it has a rather shallow and narrow continental shelf. In addition, a series of local environmental variables were obtained, allowing a ecological aspects analysis, which will be studied in this project. Each morphotype found will be studied due to eletron microsopy tecniques, aiming details of sclerites, radula and body. From the verification of new occurences for brazilian coast and description of still unknown species for the science,a nd comparing this fauna of Caudofoveta with those from another regions of Atlantic Ocean, the bathymetric and geografical distributions of these species will be analysed, providing important informations about the taxonomical and ecological diversity of a important and very little known fauna of great depths of brazilian coast.
