The physicochemical properties of conjugated biological molecules with nanostructures have been studied in recent years, mainly due to the potential application of these materials in various fields such as Medicine, electrochemical biosensors, optical devices and bio cell fuel. Thus, this project proposes a thorough study of the interaction between biomolecules (enzymes) and nanostructures. For this, we intend to evaluate the charge transfer processes between biological molecules and nanomaterials, using electrochemical techniques. Emphasis will be given the immobilization of enzymes on solid substrates, where the biocatalytic reactions will be investigated, aiming at applications in biosensors, biological fuel cells and nanostructured biodevices. Nanomaterials, together with the biomolecules will be immobilized on solid surfaces such as glass electrodes coated with tin oxide doped with indium (ITO) and gold electrodes. In particular, especially nanostructured films are obtained by self-assembly. It is intended to relate the charge transfer process and the surface structure using an optical microscope coupled to a spectrophotometer (FTIR) for generating images on surfaces containing nanoparticles and biological molecules. The Chemical Imaging technique by FTIR spectroscopy (FTIR Chemical Imaging) has been identified as the most promising among the surface techniques. This is because structural changes in biomolecules will be monitored by vibrational spectroscopy, using local mapping. Among the main objectives of this project are: synthesis and characterization of nanostructured electroactive surfaces, synthesis and characterization of metal nanoparticles immobilized in self-assembled films, immobilization of enzymes in electroactive substrates and electrochemical study of conjugated nanomaterials with biological molecules and applied biocatalysis.
