Luminescent sensors, light emitting devices or the conversion of sunlight into electric or chemical energy are some examples of phenomena/devices based on coordination compounds and due to the possibility of modulate their properties through changes in the components of the complexes. Coordination compounds usually absorb light on the visible region, which makes them suitable for their use in the development of solar energy conversion systems. The Sun is an energy source capable of supply the Earth's energy demand and has been used by nature for a long time through the process that converts it on chemical energy, the photosynthesis. Aiming to mimic this process one of the most promising systems is the light conversion into chemical energy promoting the photoreduction of CO2, generating more energetic products and decreasing the greenhouse effect caused by this gas. Investigation using Rhenium(I) polypyridyl compounds for this purpose shows that they have suitable characteristics for this function. For example, these compounds have a long excited state lifetime and adequate energy for the chemical reaction processes, and also absorb visible light and promote the catalysis of gas displacement reactions, being possible one species act both like photosensitizer and catalyst in CO2 photoreduction. In this context, it is the focus of this project the synthesis and characterization of some Rhenium(I) polypyridyl compounds to investigate their chemical properties, photochemistry and photophysics and to relate them with their application in light conversion on chemical energy through the CO2 photoreduction (AU)
