Abstract

This research proposal is related to my PhD investigation held at University of Campinas (UNICAMP), under the financial support from São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), entitled 'Documentary Film and Soundtrack: the Sounds of the Self'. It is part of a study on sound and music in documentary films that I have been conducting since my undergraduate and master's degree, also with support from FAPESP. The Research Internship Abroad (BEPE) proposed here aims as general objectives to obtain access to filmic and videographic sources located at Autralian collections and archives that are fundamental for the development of the thesis (being part of its filmographic corpus) and to expand, deepen and share theoretical and historiographical issues with professors and other researchers from Australia regarding the intersection of three pillars of the thesis: documentary film, the 'self' and film sound. It is expected that the Research Internship will play an invaluable role in my thesis as well as in the documentary film and film sound studies in Brazil regarding relevant contemporary issues (the 'self' in audiovisual narratives and sound studies). It will also enrich the theoretical and historiographical approach through a rare point of view in Brazil, based on Australian writings and on the academic exchange between members from Unicamp and Monash University. Through the access to films and writings that we do not have in Brazil, this exchange will open new analytical frontiers, deepening, expanding, and bringing issues that otherwise would not emerge.
