Webservice for geocoding addresses in spatiotemporal databases

Abstract

The project proposal submitted to eScience call, to which a fellowship of an intern is requested, has the objective of developing a platform (in the internet) to collaboratively map the history of São Paulo during 1870-1940. The proposal shall deal with urban information. Thus, it is of fundamental importance that the proposed platform offers a tool to geocode the addresses. Such a tool must be able to transform a textual query into a location. The major differential of this tool is that it should operation on spatiotemporal datasets. This operator will be made available as a web service so that it can be integrated to the proposed architecture. This intern's participation will focus in developing a public API of web services to geocode addresses. This internship is associated to other internship project: "Geocoding of Addresses in Spatiotemporal Databases" that will develop a mechanism to process geolocation queries. Therefore, this specific internship project will be dedicated to develop API of the web service. In order to achieve this, the intern shall: (a) conduct a critical review of the literature on geocoding addresses; (b) design API of services; (c) implement API and conduct validation tests and its integration into the history portal. Thus, the activities involved for this intern are essential to develop the platform since operations of converting names into places and addresses of a certain geographic location will be widely used by the research groups in history as well as other interested users of the platform.
