Abstract

Background: The Scapular Assistance Test is performed with the examiner manually assisting the scapula into upward rotation and posterior tilt while the patient elevates the arm. The test is performed in an attempt to reduce pain and increase arm range of motion. However, it is not clear in literature if scapular motion and muscle strength in individuals with positive test differ from individuals with negative test. Purpose: The aim of this study will be to compare scapular kinematics and muscle strength in individuals with shoulder pain with positive and negative Scapular Assistance Test. Methods: Seventy individuals with shoulder pain will be included and allocated in 2 groups: positive Scapular Assistance Test (n=35) and negative Scapular Assistance Test (n=35). All participants will undergo three-dimensional analysis of scapular kinematics during arm elevation in the sagittal plane. Strength of the serratus anterior, lower trapezius and external rotators of the shoulder will also be measured with a handheld dynamometer. Normality of the data will be verified with the Kolmogorov Smirnov test. In case of normal distribution, an ANOVA 2-way (group x angle) will be used to analyze scapular kinematics, and independent t test will be used to analyze muscle strength between groups. If the data is not normally distributed, non-parametric tests will be used. The significance level will be set at 5%. (AU)
