Property identification number history in São Paulo City and a corresponding database (1870-1940)

Abstract

The eScience project, which aims to create a web-based platform for the collaborative mapping of the city of São Paulo between 1870 and 1940, will grant a fellowship to an undergraduate student as a part of his or her introduction to scientific research methods. The eScience project is contributing to the increasing use of geotechnologies within historical research, a trend clearly recognizable over at least the previous decade and a half. This grantee should investigate proper literature and documentation to reconstruct the evolution of the property numbering in São Paulo and its regulation. As part of the project, a database should be built with the properties that have an identified location in time and space through their respective numbers, given the particular space selection performed by the project crew. Based on the inclusion of these properties into the São Paulo's historical base map, new other points should be included in the database, by extrapolation, which will work through the geocoding interface provided by the project. Thus, the research on the history of property numbering in São Paulo is an essential step to build and provide such collaborative platform. (AU)
