Influence of hydration on the autonomic behavior of coronary patients undergoing physical exercise in the immediate recovery period

Abstract

Coronary patients have a less efficient recovery of the parasympathetic nervous system which represents a greater risk and a worse prognosis for this population. Therefore, strategies that optimize the recovery from these patients should be studied, and the hydration during the exercise have been pointed as an effective alternative. However, until this moment, the effectiveness of this technic has been studied only in health populations. Objective: Investigate the influence of hydration on the autonomic behavior of coronary patients in the immediate recovery period after a session of cardiovascular rehabilitation. Methods: Will be recruited, 31 men with main diagnosis of ischemic heart disease and with ejection fraction above 50%, attending to a center of cardiovascular rehabilitation in the city of Presidente Prudente - SP. The subjects will be submitted to three steps (48 hours between each step): I) The maximal stress test on treadmill, where they will be monitored and accompanied by a cardiologist, to determinate the load that will be used in the next steps; II) Control Protocol (CP) and III) Experimental Protocol (EP). Those protocols consist in 10 minutes of standing rest, followed by 15 minutes of warm up, with activities that involves stretching and global exercises, 40 minutes of treadmill physical exercise followed by 10 minutes of passive recovery with the volunteers standing on the treadmill. Only during the EP there will be mineral water intake. For the analysis of the recovery period will be calculated the heart rate on the immediate period after the exercise and the RMSSD index in the period of 30 seconds. For this, the heart rate will be recorded beat-to-beat using the heart rate monitor (Polar S810i). Besides that, will be applied subjective scales of effort, pain and recovery in specific moments during the exercise and/or recovery. The hydration level of the volunteers will be obtained by the urine specific density exam before and after the CP and EP. To comparison of heart rate recovery, RMSSD of 30 seconds and perceptions between the protocols (CP vs EP) and moments (as describe above for each studied variable) the technic of Analysis of Variance for the model of repeated measures in scheme of two factors will be used, followed by the post hoc tests. The analysis of the different moments between the groups will be done using the t Student test or the Mann Whitney test. The significance adopted will be fixed on 5%. (AU)
