Abstract

The increasing concern with the environment presents the need to replace one of the main components in propellants formulations, the oxidizer. In the ongoing research for an oxidizer that meets the requirements for a new generation of propellants, the most promising is the ADN - Ammonium Dinitramide. ADN is non-toxic and does not cause damage to health or to the environment. However, its use is difficult since it presents high hygroscopicity and chemical incompatibility with one of the components present in propellants formulations. In this context, this project pursues the development of processes to prepare coatings for spherical ADN particles in order to make them stable and compatible with the rest of the propellant. The processes required to carry out the present master's research project are well known by the responsible researchers and can be conducted in our laboratory. The coated ADN will be tested on rocket propellants in the Aeronautics and Space Institute, in order to evaluate the possibility of their application in propellants produced by the institute. This is a pioneer research project in the Southern Hemisphere and will be a major advance for Brazilian science and technology, and in addition it provides the candidate with an interdisciplinary academic qualification in space propulsion area.
