Abstract

Teachers complaining about students lack of interest in school, the subjects and the academic life itself, has become a commonplace. These complaints, along with others issues and questions, were noticed during the 18-months experience developing project focused on Reading and Writing with Elementary School students. This project has as its main aim to study the relationship between students and school. In the present case, the interest, or lack of it, were understood as two halfs of the same whole. This work embraces in its structure one borrowed contribution from the psychology fiel on the theme of school failure which says that one among several reasons for this failure is the lack of engagement or interest at the core. Also considering and relying on Pierre Bourdieu sociological perspective, the engagement/interest issue is analyzed in the midst of concepts such as field, habtus and illusio. Hence this work is aimed to examine the unfolding of the lack of interest within the school. (AU)
