Abstract

Quiescent galaxies with little or no ongoing star formation dominate the population of galaxies with masses above 2E10 Msun in the local universe. Once star formation has been shut down in a possible quasar phase, energy feedback in the form of outflows from a supermassive black hole (SMBH) accreting at a low rate is one of the leading candidates for heating up or removing gas accreted afterwards. However, the nature of such outflows is an unresolved question in black hole (BH) physics. The goal of this project is to perform global, multidimensional hydrodynamical and MHD simulations of radiatively inefficient accretion flows around SMBHs, in order to investigate in a self-consistent way the winds produced by the accreting black hole. We will quantify the amount of energy, momentum and mass outflow rates, characterize the geometry and collimation of wind, and the density profile of the accretion flow, which will be compared against observations. With this work, we will be able to evaluate if these BH winds provide efficient feedback inside the host galaxy. (AU)
