Graphene nanostructures are currently considered strategic in basic and applied science because of their unconventional properties. Therefore, it is highly important to seek approaches to produce high quality graphene nanostructures with controlled forms and properties. Thus, the present project aims to synthesize nanostructures of graphene with controlled sizes and shapes for the study of non-linear optical and plasmonic effects. Graphene nanostructures will be synthesized using bottom-up methods based on hydrocarbon decomposition reactions catalyzed by transition metal surfaces, mainly nickel, copper and cobalt. Transition metal nanoparticles will, e.g., be used as templates for the growth of graphene nanostructures with controlled sizes and shapes.
