Proposal for a controlled, clinical trial on the effect of photodynamic therapy with low-level laser on infected dentin in primary teeth and clinical performance of glass ionomer cement restorations

Abstract

The aim of the proposed study is to evaluate the clinical effect of photodynamic therapy on dentin infected with dental caries in primary teeth. The study will comprise three groups: G1 - caries removal with a low-speed drill; G2 - application of Papacarie MBlue modified with methylene blue. The methods will be based on the selection of patients with primary molars with deep occlusal dental caries divided into two groups depending on the restorative clinical treatment. In the sample, 32 teeth will be selected for the treatment of infected dentin and the use of low-level laser (photodynamic therapy). For the microbiological analysis, dentin samples will be removed before and after the interventions. The results will be analyzed through microbiological samples grown in Brucella blood agar, Mitis salivarius-bacitracin and Rogosa SL agar. The teeth will then be restored with high-viscosity glass ionomer cement. The individuals will be followed up clinically and radiographically, with evaluations at three, six and nine months. The data will be submitted to descriptive statistical analysis of the association between the categorical variables and both age and gender using the chi-square test and Fisher's exact text. The Student's t-test and analysis of variance will be used for the comparison of mean signs and symptoms of reversible pulpitis. Pearson's correlation coefficients will be calculated for the analysis of correlations among the continuous variables. (AU)
