Hypocretin gene 1 (orexin a) expression in women with severe obesity undergoing Roux-en Y gastric

Abstract

Obesity has become a major public health problems in the world, along with chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension and dyslipidemia. Factors that may trigger the onset of the disease are various, including lifestyle, eating habits, physical inactivity and genetic causes. The orexin-A gene in adipose tissue has functions such as the regulation of lipolysis and energy expenditure, suggesting that in obese individuals, the expression of this gene can be decreased. One of the treatments for severe obesity is bariatric surgery and gastric bypass Roux-Y (DGYR) is the technique performed. In this context, it suggests the hypothesis that the decrease of adipose tissue resulting from surgery, may be associated with increased orexin gene expression and, together with a balanced diet, make it easier to control the weight of these individuals. Objective: To investigate the expression of orexin gene in women with severe obesity submitted to DGYR. Patients and Methods: Patients will be selected in a university hospital and divided into two groups: Bariatric Group: women with severe obesity (body mass index - BMI & gt; 35 kg / m²) underwent surgery and control group: normal weight women (BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 kg / m²), each with 10 members each. Before and after the procedure will be carried out anthropometric measurements (weight, height, BMI and body composition), food intake (24 hour recall) and peripheral blood collection for analysis of expression of orexin gene. The Shapiro-Wilk test checks the normality of the data, the paired t-test is used to compare variables between pre and postoperative. (AU)
