Abstract

Alcoholism is a progressive and recurrent chronic disease that causing damage to health and to society, and its development is characterized by frequent episodes of intoxication, and this behavior is influenced by genetic and psychosocial factors. Several brain systems are sensitized by chronic alcohol use, and the neurodegeneration may occur in the long term. Damage caused by alcohol consumption may present acutely or chronically, and are related to individual consumption patterns, including the frequency and amount that the substance is ingested, the time between one consumption and other, and the context in which the person drinks. in The long-term damage prejudice, and other functions, the motor function of the individual, through various structures such as the basal ganglia (which modulates motor planning) and the cerebellum (which acts in the execution of movement and motor control). Thus, this project aims to assess motor function among the elderly (age over 60 years) with chronic alcohol use during periods that differ in average 10 years of one group to another, compared to a control group, to analyze possible deficits functional motors that can occur as a result of alcohol use, in association with the time and drinking pattern. Will be formed three groups with 50 elderly participants in each: a control group (CO group) and two groups of chronic ingestion or alcohol abuse (Group A1 and Group A2), in which only the intake time will differentiate them, composing different intervals of 10 years of use from one group to another. To evaluate the time and pattern of alcohol intake will be used Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) and for analysis of motor function and its possible functional deficits will use the Walk Test of 6 Minutes and the Motor Scale for the Elderly (EMTI), comprising the following dimensions: fine motor skills, overall motor skills, balance, body image / speed, spatial organization and language / temporal organization. Finally, the questionnaire Short Form Health Survey (SF - 36) will be applied for analyses of quality of life, and that includes the general state of health, social, functional capacity, physical aspects, pain, emotional aspects and mental health, factors that may be related to the quality of motor functioning.
