Abstract

High rates of lime and fertilizers promote several changes in chemical attributes of highly weathered tropical soils. Some of these changes directly influence the sorption relationship between heavy metals and inorganic and organic soil colloids by affecting the mobility and availability of heavy metals in the soil. The main goal of this research internship abroad, which is linked to the FAPESP research project n° 2016/05870-1, is to evaluate changes in speciation of Cd and Zn in soils solution and their adsorption and desorption mechanisms in highly fertilized soils cropped with oleraceus. Specifically, our objectives are to: i) understand how high bioavailable levels of P, Ca and Mg affect Cd and Zn adsorption in soils and soils compounds ii) identify and characterize soil organic matter compounds that regulate the mobility of Cd and Zn in the soils iii) identify and quantify chemical species of Zn and Cd adsorbed and desorbed in soil colloids and iv) develop a model to describe heavy metals´ adsorption-desorption in soil based in data obtained from isolated soil compounds. Soil sampling and the main routine analytical analyses have already been done. Our expectation is to carry out spectroscopic analysis for soils and soil compounds at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of Rutgers University (Newark, NJ, US). We also plan to obtain and to interpret the data generated by conventional (Fourier transformer infrared, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photon emission) and synchrotron radiation based X-ray absorption techniques.
