Abstract

Bertolt Brecht's thought was a key reference for filmmakers such as Glauber Rocha, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, Julio García Espinosa, Jorge Sanjinés and Fernando Solanas. To deepen the debate on modern and politically-committed cinema in Latin America, it is important to analyse works in a comparative perspective, finding similarities and differences between them. In the filmic and theoretical work of these filmmakers, the incorporation of Brecht's proposals is an aspect that draws attention, setting up a common element to be taken as basis for the study of "political cinema" in Latin America, given that the thought of Brecht have not only fertilized the work of such directors, but also served as a link between them, as they were concerned with the transformation of cinema's social function. This research aims to verify, therefore, in the filmic and theoretical work of the aforementioned filmmakers, how the appropriation of Bertolt Brecht's aesthetic propositions occurred. That for, two key topics should be taken into account: the German artist own relationship with cinema, and the ideas in vogue between the 1960s and the 1970s in film theory and criticism, that also appropriated Brecht's thought. Such topics will represent the foundation for the analysis of the transposition of Brecht's ideas to the cinema of Latin America. (AU)
