This research proposal aims at investigating the current changes in the ways of thinking and conceiving the penal practices, related to the recent development of the electronic monitoring of offenders in Brazil. The formulation of new penal measures beyond detention, the increasing involvement of private capital in the administration of punishment and the impacts of technological development on criminal justice system are some of the issues that characterize the recent transformations in penal rationality, requiring an extensive and detailed analysis. The research project describes an eleven-month work plan in Centre de Recherches Sociologiques sur le Droit et les Institutions Pénales (CESDIP), between September 2017 and July 2018. CESDIP is a subordinate authority of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the French Ministry of Justice, the University of Versailles-Saint-Quentin and the University of Cergy-Pontoise. The research will be supervised by Professor René Lévy, permanent member of CESDIP and research director in CNRS. The relevance of this project lies on the access to the bibliographic collection of CESDIP and the universities that the centre is affiliated, as well as the discussion and analysis of the empirical data collected in Brazil, related to the subject of my doctoral research sponsored by FAPESP: the enforcement and expansion of electronic monitoring of prisoners in Brazil. The contact with researches and researchers that work with Sociology of Punishment and its interfaces with Surveillance Studies, still incipient in Brazil, will provide the enlargement of the theoretical, methodological and epistemological tools used in the analysis of the empirical material collected. It is worth mentioning that this doctoral research is linked to the FAPESP Thematic Project, 'The govern of conflict in the production of contemporary city: the case of São Paulo', coordinated by Professor Vera da Silva Telles and Professor Marcos César Alvarez. Thereby, the Thematic Project progresses, related to the rearticulation of technologies of punishment and crime control will be led to discussion during the research period abroad. It is expected than to establish dialogs and exchanges between the researches linked to the FAPESP Thematic Project and the studies developed in CESDIP. (AU)
