Abstract

Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the world. Trace elements have been studied for the prevention or treatment of such diseases. The mineral magnesium plays a key role in metabolism, hypertension, inflammation, and CVD. Objective: To verify the association of magnesium intake with the coronary calcium score (CAC) in participants of ELSA-Brasil study, in the São Paulo Research Center. Methods: This is an observational, cross-sectional study, developed from the baseline data from the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health - ELSA Brasil. It will be included participants from the cohort of São Paulo (n = 4,549) of both sexes. The individual food intake was estimated by validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). The coronary artery calcium was estimated through a computed tomography, and will be classified from Agatson criteria, such as 0 or > 0; <100 or e100 and <400 or e400. To test the association between coronary calcium score and magnesium intake, will be used multiple logistic regression analysis, with adjustment for potential confounding factors, such as, gender, age, race, per capita income or education level, body mass index, smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption, total energy intake, calcium intake, potassium, saturated fat, fiber, and use of drugs, use of hormone replacement therapy (women only), or the presence of hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia. A statistical analysis will be performed in STATA® statistical software, version 12 and a p-value<0.05 was considered statistically significant. (AU)
