Abstract

Following a worldwide trend of restructuring in pulp industry in Brazil producers of eucalyptus pulp are interested in expanding their business with the production of new products from renewable sources to replace those derived from petroleum. Possible options product-process to be integrated into Kraft pulp mills are diverse. Among these, there are those based on sugars platform, that means the production of sugars from biomass by physical-chemical and enzymatic treatment and subsequent fermentation of sugars. Although technical integration conditions (factory-biorefinery) favorable and strategic interest of companies to invest in biorefinery, the competitiveness of sugar will depend on factors such as a source of biomass, pretreatment technology, enhancement of lignin and the price of enzymes. In addition, forestry companies have no acting experience in the new biorefinery markets.Given these challenges, this master's work will develop conceptual biorefineries projects for the production of lignocellulosic sugar in a pulp kraft mill taking into account different combinations of raw materials and fractionation technologies and deployment of strategies focusing on enhancement of lignin. The proposed scenarios will be evaluated from a technical and economic point of view. In order to assist decision-making regarding the choice of most promising markets and partners for lignocellulosic sugars, this work will also develop a methodology for the systematic selection of markets.
