Abstract

This project aims to explore x-ray Micro-tomography (x-ray MicroCT) technique and 3D visualization to perform archaeobotanical studies. Particularly, it is intended to evaluate its analytical scope as an alternative to certain methodological procedures used to identify botanical remains that negatively interfere in preservation of archaeobotanical and/or associated archaeological items. To this end, plant vestiges from Brazilian Amazonian and Northwestern Argentina archaeological sites will be analyzed using x-ray MicroCT facilities with different technical specificities. Therefore, it is hoped to obtain a comparative evaluation about technique and instrumental suitability according to particular traits of varying archaeobotanical specimens. It is also expected to reach detailed knowledge about x-ray MicroCT and 3D visualization techniques in order to improve and complement current methodological procedures used in taxonomic identification of botanical remains. Finally this project wishes to be a contribution to the study and preservation of plant remains as well as the archaeological material in general. (AU)
