Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases are the major cause of death in the world and it is estimated that, in 2030, they will be responsible for approximately 23.6 million deaths. Among cardiovascular diseases, we can highlight acute coronary syndromes, especially acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Heart failure is a frequent complication after the AMI and several factors influence its development, one of these factors is cardiac remodeling. The increased oxidative stress and inflammation process are associated with cardiac remodeling after the AMI. Due to the great economic and social impact and the high mortality rates, it is important to identify other factors that attenuate cardiac remodeling process. Among these factors are the food supplementation with antioxidant properties, such as Spondias mombin (SM). It is believed that its beneficial effects are attributed to the phenolic compounds, flavonoids and carotenoids present in the fruit. One study evaluated the administration of SM in a myocardial injury induced by isoproterenol and observed increased activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase and decreased concentrations of glutathione and malondealdeído. However, the SM influence on cardiac remodeling after the AMI was not studied yet. (AU)
