Abstract

Epiponini (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) is a diverse group of Neotropical social wasps with around 234 described species. These insects draw attention due to their variable nest architecture, swarm reproduction, subtle morphological difference among castes and a high chromosomal diversity. The main purpose of this project is to understand the relationship between chromosomal evolution and the diversification of Epiponini wasps. To do so, a time-calibrated phylogeny for these insects will be inferred using next-generation sequencing of ultraconserved elements (UCEs). These genomic elements have been used to study evolutionary relationships of multiple groups, including hymenopterans. Thus, specific probes for targeted enrichment of UCE loci developed for Hymenoptera will be used to gather 600+ UCE loci per sample, an unprecedented data set in comparative studies in social wasps. Results generated in this research will be readily integrated into a project about evolutionary dynamic of repetitive DNA (Proc. FAPESP 2015/02432-0) being currently conducted by the candidate of this proposal. (AU)
