Abstract

The current scenario of distribution networks features a high interest on the integration of new power electronic based technologies (e.g., energy storage, photovoltaic generation and electric vehicles) for improving network efficiency and controllability, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, improving power quality (PQ) indices etc. However, as a side effect, many new operation challenges and PQ impacts may emerge. The research group headed by Prof. Bala Venkatesh at Ryerson University, Canada, is developing a series of projects to address the above requirements and reduce technical barriers for the integration of these new technologies. A key feature of these projects is that the methodologies developed to effectively operate these modern technologies are implemented and tested in practice, by means of actual field and laboratory tests. In this context, this project goal is to provide an 8-month internship for the student at the group supervised by Prof. Venkatesh. If approved, the student will actively participate in the assessment of PQ impacts caused by modern distribution networks devices, and in the development of methodologies to operate these devices so that PQ indices can be improved and adverse PQ impacts can be limited. The proposed methods and obtained measurements will have great applicability in the current development stage of distribution networks, also complementing the PhD research associated with this project and being useful for future research projects conducted by the Canadian group and by the Brazilian group headed by Prof. Walmir Freitas (supervisor of his PhD project in Brazil). Another important objective of this internship consists in providing the student with an opportunity to visit Prof. Venkatesh research group at the Centre for Urban Energy, Canada, and strengthen the existing collaboration between the Brazilian and Canadian groups. This collaboration with an internationally renowned research center is also of great value for the student professional development. (AU)
