Abstract

The Equidae rolling behavior is naturally exercised as self-grooming activity, parasite control, maintenance of body temperature, territorial strategies and social cohesion. However, the domestication and intensification of production systems restricted space of the animals, thus limiting the possibility of occurrence of this behavior, which should interfere with their welfare conditions. In this context, the objective is to characterize the rolling behavior in domesticated horses and mules and by a Preference Index access if there is a preference for substrate type to express the rolling behavior, also if the work and handling of animals influences the occurrence of this behavior. Therefore, 8 horses and 8 mules will be used, who will undergo three experimental phases: Study 1) Observation in natura to the description of rolling behavior (frequency and duration of behavior); Study 2) Tests of choice for 15 consecutive days to determine the preferences for type of substrate to express such behavior, with three choices being made available simultaneously: manure, sand and grass. Preferences will be tested after the completion of exercise at different intensities, so as to determine the influence on the rolling behavior. Study 3) shower Influence of post-exercise frequency of this behavior. (AU)
