Abstract

One of the main objectives of the processing of seismic data is to provide a detailed subsurface image of geological structures. Those images are typically obtained through depth migration techniques, most prominently the ones that are based on the wave equation. Under the use of a depth-velocity model inverted from the data, wave-equation techniques correlate the propagating wave fields from thesources with back-propagating fields from receivers through the application of a so-called imaging condition. The construction of such wave fields require intense computational effort, being crucially dependent on a velocity model extracted from the data [3]. As a consequence, methodologies and algorithms that are able to accurately and efficiently extract velocity models for depth migration are in high demand. Among the various approaches reported in the literature, so-called tomographic inversionalgorithms occupy a prominent role. The present project aims to advance the understanding ofvelocity-model building from seismic data with emphasis on the tomographic inversion approach.Besides a thorough investigation on the theoretical basis of that approach, the research will concentrate the development and testing of algorithms in realistic or real-data examples.
