Abstract

Gastroschisis is an abdominal wall defect, and despite the excellent post surgical prognosis has a higher risk of intra uterine death compared to other fetal malformations. Therefore fetal wellbeing monitoring is performed weekly in these pregnancies from 32 weeks onwards. In the literature search we did not find studies examining the fetal movements (FM) pattern in fetuses with gastroschisis. Objectives: The primary aim is to compare the FM pattern between fetuses with gastroschisis and normal fetuses. As a secondary aim we will analyze the FM pattern, in fetuses with gastroschisis, according to the ultrasound findings, such as: extra abdominal bowel dilation, intra abdominal bowel dilation, stomach location extra- or intra- abdominal, presence of meconium stained amniotic fluid and the presence of complex gastroschisis at birth. Methods: This will be a prospective, longitudinal cohort study involving 51 singleton pregnancies with normal fetuses and 51 pregnancies with fetuses with gastroschisis. The pregnant women will be included in the study from 28 weeks onward according to the inclusion criteria. The fetal movements recording will be performed using the 'count to 10' method. The estimate time needed to conduct the study is 30 months.
