The incidence of fungal infection, especially those caused by Candida, has increased in the last two decades. Vulvovaginal candidiasis is an opportunistic fungal infection that causes significant problem to women's health. In addition, these yeasts are highlighted by several virulence factors such as biofilm formation, morphological transition between yeast and hyphae, adhesion and production of hydrolytic enzymes. The therapy for control of fungal infection, especially to azole, polyene and echinocandins, has limitations such as high cost, high toxicity, drug interactions, and insufficient bioavailability of the active ingredient and emergence of resistant strains. In this sense, medicinal plants emerge as an alternative in the search for new antifungal agents. Additionally, nanotechnology is presented as a tool in improving the antifungal activity of natural products. The results even now (dissertation) showed promising activity of the essential oil against Candida spp. what stimulates the study of the control of biofilms and in the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the antifungal potential of the essential oil of Cymbopogon nardus (citronella) in the prospection of Candida spp. biofilm control and their application in the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis. The essential oil will be incorporated into a nanostructured drug delivery system (lipid microemulsion) in order to improve their antifungal action. Monotypic biofilms (C. albicans, C. glabrata and C. krusei) and heterotypic (+ Lactobacillus sp) will be used, in vitro and in vivo testing in Chamber Flow Technique and residence time.
