Abstract

The communication is not restricted to dialogue, it is also fulfilled by the clothing, by customs, over dances, images and music. The objects can be classified and described, they are varied and can be books, historical artifacts, architectural objects, paintings and useful objects. The challenge for information professional is how to classify and describe objects that do not have a fully denotative definition, as the images. An image is any artistic representation and can be works of art, photographs, popular art, illustrations and figures in advertising. The description of an image will never be full and it is not only a specific level. For describing these objects are needed more details and information, that depending on the user or how the image was recorded. The aim of this research is to analyze the conceptual bases of semiotics present in the analysis of images in information science in Brazil. We know that the images don't have a single meaning, but it is derived from meanings imposed by society. We will search analyze the theories of sign, connotation and denotation. We believe that with the description of this type of document, the collective memory will be preserved and facilite the information retrieval, make possible a standard representation. For information science, we undertand the organization of knowledge objects that are imagistic or not. It is only possible through the classification and indexing, which will make to retrieve documents, share and, most importantly, create a new knowledge to the users.
