Abstract

Intestinal neuroendocrine epithelial cells synthesize the highest body levels of serotonin (5-HT). Although 5-HT has been thought to promote the development of colon carcinogenesis, how it promotes colon cancer remains unknown. We will investigate the effects of 5-HT on colon carcinogenesis in either carcinogen-exposed or -unexposed (azoxymethane; AOM) wildtype (+/+) and knockout mice (-/-) for the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (Tph1+/+; Tph1-/-). Current project has a work plan for one-and-half years. Future findings will provide a novel understanding on the role of the serotonergic system in colon carcinogenesis. (AU)
