Abstract

Based on the outcomes of previous work (FERREIRA, 2012), the present research intends to continue the studies about the impact of vegetation clearance in São Paulo Metropolitan Region. The objective of this work is to quantify the impact of vegetation clearance in urban microclimate and to establish an insertion procedure of microclimate parameters of surface temperature, air temperature and humidity in the decision-making process and planning of vegetation in urban areas. The hypothesis of the study is that the vegetation cover loss causes increased surface temperature and reduced humidity, contributing to the increase of air temperature and thus the thermal discomfort in São Paulo Metropolitan Area, negatively impacting the quality of life in urban areas.Variations in the surface temperature obtained from satellite images will be analysed. Changes in surface temperature will be compared to the changes in vegetation cover in the same period. Data from different fixed weather stations in São Paulo will also be analyzed. The weather stations data will be correlated with land use information in the vicinity of the stations, quantified by remote sensing in order to evaluate the relationship between vegetation changes and changes in microclimate parameters. It is expected that the results achieved in both scales (the vicinity of the weather stations and the city of São Paulo as a whole), can provide information on the impact of vegetation cover changes in the microclimate parameters, supporting public policies of urban vegetation management.
