Abstract

A bibliography review is proposed on the principal technical, operational and constructive characteristics on metal-oxide surge arresters, widely used in power systems for electromagnetic transient suppression from atmospheric and switching impulse. Based on the classic references and from the state of the art, the equivalent model of metal-oxide surge arresters is represented by means of equivalent electrical circuits, which are approached by several forms in the technical literature. The surge arrester is modeled within a conventional power transmission system and electromagnetic transients are simulated using computational resources, such as the Alternative Transient Program - ATP and the commercial software PSCAD. A electromagnetic transient analysis is proposed based on up-to-date technical standards in high-voltage methods, which are established by the International Electrotechnical Commission - IEC.
