Abstract

During the bone repair, 5 to 10% of the cases may culminate in an abnormal consolidation, resulting in a delay of this event or, even, in a non-union fracture. This scenario is related to high morbidity and mortality, as well as high costs to the public health system. In this context, it is necessary the investigation of treatments which have osteogenic potential, accelerating the bone healing process. Among these treatments, the application of biomaterials, for instance, bioactive materials, such as bioglass, combined with other materials, like magnesium and collagen, has been in evidence in the last years. Moreover, the low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is widely used to accelerate bone metabolism and the association of this therapeutic approach with biomaterials has been investigated by some authors. However, there are no studies that demonstrate the effect on bone healing of these treatments in association (biomaterials + LLLT). For this purpose, the aim of this study is to evaluate, by in vivo tests, the effects of LLLT associated with bioglass / collagen / magnesium composites on the repair of bone defects induced in the tibia of rats. Toward this goal, male wistar rats will be submitted to a surgical procedure for obtaining the bone defects in both tibias. The animals will be divided into 4 groups: (I) bioglass / magnesium; (II) bioglass / magnesium + laser; (III) bioglass / collagen / magnesium; (IV) bioglass / collagen / magnesium + laser. The animals will be euthanized 15 and 45 days post-surgery. Histopathology, morphometry and immunohistochemistry analysis will be performed.
