Abstract

Introduction: Tobacco use affects the overall health of smokers, causing important cardiorespiratory disorders. Thus, to evaluate the influence of immediate smoking and of smoking abstinence in cardiorespiratory performance and recovery of excessive post-exercise oxygen consumption is essential to elucidate these effects on aerobic and recuperative capacities of smokers. Aim: To evaluate the effects of immediate smoking and smoking abstinence in aerobic capacity and in recovery of excessive post-exercise oxygen consumption after a maximum effort in healthy smokers. Methods: Cross-over study in which will be evaluated 34 smokers, physically inactive, with normal lung function. Patients will undergo a cardiopulmonary test on two occasions (after smoking immediately and with 12 hours of abstinence). The allocation of patients to the different moments of the cardiopulmonary test will be held in a randomized mode. Statistical analysis: For data analysis will be used the statistical program Graphpad Prism. The normality of the data will be evaluated by the Shapiro-Wilk test. For intergroup analysis (immediate smoking and abstinence smoking) will be used the unpaired t test or Mann-Whitney test, depending on the normality of the data. The description of the results will be held as mean ± standard deviation, except for variables with non-normal distribution, which will be described as median (interquartile range 25-75) . The level of significance will be p <0.05.Keywords: Smoking, oxygen uptake, anaerobic threshold. (AU)
