Abstract

This research, consequence of our former investigations, will focus on the possible relation between the Second Discourse and the Social Contract in order to understand how Rousseau's great critic work can relate to his great propositive work. Our hypothesis is that not only the principles of the ideal society specified on the Social Contract aim to face the problems pertaining to the civil state such as characterized in the Second Discourse, but also that the possibility itself of the realization and maintenance of that ideal society is just found and justified if we consider, not only the human nature, but also the potentialities of the human faculties developed along the civilizing process exposed in the Discourse. It is indispensable, however, to confirm our hypothesis, that we question about the elements that make possible to us to conceive the passage from the society of the Discourse to the ideal society exposed in the Contract. Such elements, we believe, can be detected when Rousseau, in Emile, presents the ideal model of the moral education of an individual. Therefore, to verify this hypothesis, we must first analyze the social diagnosis, the human nature, and the human potentialities exposed by Rousseau in the Second Discourse; following that, we must understand the problems that the model proposed in the Social Contract aims to solve and which are the conditions that could realize and maintain such model; and finally, we must question about the possible contribution of Emile to the search of the elements that make possible justify and understand the passage from the society of the Discourse to the society of the Contract.
