Embedded in the land: an ethnography of the struggle of the people of Trombas and Formoso (GO)

Abstract

This project aims to carry out an ethnographic study of the peasant conflict in Trombas e Formoso, which happened around 1950, paying attention to the diversity of the resistance actions that feature it. The struggle, term used by the peasants to describe what occurred back then, became known as an armed conflict in the north of the state of Goiás against the expropriation process of lands, leaded by "grileiros" and supported by the state government's politics. Nevertheless, apart from the armed conflict, the study focus on identifying and understanding other constitutive examples of peasant conflicts. Something grounded not only in the direct clashes, but most of all, in the sociability and in the daily life of the peasants. For this, the narratives of the social individuals about the struggle memories will be considered as part of the ethnographic work. Due to the fact that once the struggle memories are organized and classifieds in a specific temporality, they become paramount in the creation of an opposed legitimated narrative theoretically accepted and created by institutions such as the "Partido Comunista Brasileiro" (PCB) and the State at the beginning of the military regime, installed with the 1964 coup of state. In this paper, it has been assumed that the social and political dimension of the peasant's life are shuffled in the peasant struggle of Trombas and Formoso. (AU)
