Influence of resin infiltration treatment on whitening of stained bovine enamel surfaces

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate in vitro possible influences of resin infiltration on whitening process of discolored bovine enamel surfaces. Materials and Methods: Twenty cylindrical bovine enamel specimens (E) with 6mm in diameter and 1 mm in height will be obtained using a trephine drill. The specimens will be randomly divided into two groups. The control group (n = 10) will not undergo infiltrating treatment and the test group will be resin infiltrated (Icon, DMG, Hamburg, Germany). In both groups, an artificial coloring will be conducted by simulating an extrinsic staining of tooth surface. The samples will be placed in individual vials containing 2 ml of a modified staining broth (ADA) for 14 days. Specimens will be submitted to color assessment by means of a reflectance spectrometer (Model CM 2600d - Konica Minolta - Osaka, Japan), according to the CIE L * a * b * system. A demineralization of the tooth surface will be held in a 50 mM acetate buffer solution, followed by resin infiltration for the test group, according to the manufacturer's instructions. The bleaching procedures will be performed using 15% carbamide peroxide gel (Ultradent Inc.), eight hours per day for 14 days and a final color evaluation is performed. The statistical comparison between groups will be performed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (± = 0.05).
