Ways of living in the metropolis: domesticity, preservation and memory in modern duplex apartments in São Paulo

Abstract

The proposed research aims to investigate duplex apartment models proposed and built by architects related to the modern movement and its interpretation and uses in Brazil, questioning the live models promoted by the private sector or by the State and analyzing its preservation and new uses. It will be studied ways of living in duplex apartments in multi-functional buildings constructed since the 1930s in São Paulo, guided by models of modern architecture rationalization of housing, insert the minimum housing in autonomous residential units and way of life in the metropolis. Inserted in research on domesticity coming from the field of social history, we seek to study gender relations and women's role in the provision and the uses of these modern spaces, either from the perspective of residents, whether from the perspective of developers - architects, engineers and market investors real estate. It is further proposed to investigate the relationship between the new housing aimed at those interested in living close to places of work, leisure and commerce, relating directly to the habits of modern life in the period of construction and nowadays.
