Analysis of dentine structure loss and tubule occlusion after erosive and abrasive challenge with toothpastes containing desensitizing agents: a randomized in situ study

This in situ study will evaluate the effects of different toothpastes indicated for the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity by means of optical profilometry and scanning electron microscope. One hundred and night two dentin samples (3x3x1.5mm) will be prepared from intact human third molars and positioned on removable intraoral appliances of 12 volunteers that will be selected previously. Samples will be randomly divided into 4 groups: Group 1: erosion / abrasion with distilled water (negative control group); Group 2: erosion / abrasion with Colgate Maximum Anti-caries protection (positive control group); Group 3: erosion / abrasion with Colgate Pro-Relief (Arginine); Group 4: erosion / abrasion with Sensodyne Repair and Protect (NovaMin®). During the use of the appliance, erosion cycles will be performed, where the samples will be immersed6x / day for 2minutes in citric acid solution of 1% (pH = 2.3) and abrasion performed with the use of electric toothbrushes (2x /day for 5 seconds). Specimens will be evaluated in Optical Profilometry for evaluation of surface wear (n =192) and Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (n = 96) to evaluate the morphology/changes caused by desensitizing agents on the surface of dentin. The results will be evaluated according to the most appropriate statistical test after the evaluation of homogeneity and normality of the data. (AU)
