Optimizing bioretention operation and maintenance of stormwater treatment practices in subtropical climate

Abstract

In Brazil, urban drainage have beem historically focused on hydraulic treatment for runoff conduction. In the beginning of the 90s starts a paradigm shift related to SUDS studies, seeking to offset urbanization effects on runoff, in local scene, in order to maintain the water cycle as close as possible to the natural. Recent studies have been focused on improvement analysis of water quality and water retention separately, by the use of SUDS. However, there is still a gap as the qualitative and quantitative variables integration and understanding. In addiction, studies have focused in temperate climate regions, while there is still little knowledge about the influence in other climates efficiency. Therefore, this projet aims to evaluate a bioretention operation, in a subtropical climate region, as its diffuse pollution treatment and water retention capacity in an integrated manner. From the observed results, it will be possible to assess the need for maintenance over time, optimizing both the operation process as the maintenance itself. The research methodology consists of four main steps: (1) laboratory evaluation of the bioretention use, from controlled events carried out in prototype, (2) pollution load removal efficiency evaluation, from the drainage water qualitative monitoring inlet and outlet the practice applied in field, (3) runoff retention capacity evaluation, from the quantitative monitoring input and output of the practice applied in the field. The study will be conducted in Universidade de São Paulo - Campus Área 2, located in São Carlos - SP. Finally, the results will be analyzed using the concept of general efficiency, diffuse pollution treatment efficiency, water retention efficiency and marginal efficiency. (AU)
