Abstract

The cloud forests at the Serra da Mantiqueira e da Serra do Mar have a vital role in the fresh water supply through the cloud water condensation in contact with vegetation. Thus, they represent substantial and additional sources of regional water along with rainfall amounts. Nonetheless there is not literature on accounting this additional source of water in the cloud ecosystems. The adequate planning in cloud forest conservation will ensure the continuous production of water in mountains springs. The results of this proposal will generate benefits to promote conservation actions at these locals towards producing ecosystem services, and help giving scientific support for the increase of initiatives such as the payment of ecosystem services. We propose modelling southeast Brazilian Atlantic cloud forest extent (Serra do Mar, Serra da Mantiqueira plus Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral in the South region) for the current and future climate, and assess the degree of vulnerability of these forests to climate change. Assess whether the hydro climatic variables are capable to define the cloud forests as distinct groups within the Atlantic forest vegetation types. (AU)
