The aim of the present proposal is to calcute the macrocharacteristics of a rarefied gas flow around micro and nano particles caused by evaporation and condensation on the surface. The numerical calculations are based on the solution of a kinetic model to the Boltzmann equation via the discrete velocity method. The macroscopic characteristics of the gas such as pressure, temperature, bulk velocity and heat flux around the sphere will be calculated in a broad range of the Knudsen number, which is defined as the ratio of the mean free path to a characteristic length of the gas domain. In the hydrodynamic regime, corresponding to situations in which the Knudsen number is very small (low degree of gas rarefaction), the results will be compared to those obtained via continuum mechanics equations with appropriate boundary conditions. A comparison with experimental results, as well as other theoretical results obtained via different approaches, available in the literature will be also done in order to verify the reliability of the numerical scheme in the whole range of the Knudsen number. A visit of 4 months to the Aix-Marseille University, France, is being planned to study evaporation and condensation phenomena in gaseous mixtures. (AU)
