Appropriation of urban space school for children living in rural areas

Abstract

This project relates to studies that argument that children who reside in rural areas can suffer discrimination related to their area of residence, particularly when they go to school in urban areas. This would occur due to stereotypes involving farmers seen as "late" compared to urban environment, and also visions of rural itself, seen only for the aspect of economic production, forgetting that it preserves a different way of life , even with technological changes that occur in the globalized world. The research has as a goal to investigate how 1st and 2ndyear children from a rural establishment connected to the Landless Workers' Movement and a district, both in the Ribeirão Preto (SP) region, use school space. The theoretical framework supports itself in the concept of appropriation of space, developed by the Environmental Psychology to characterize the relationship of a person with the environment in which they live and the transformation of both with the interactions. Participants of the research will be 1st and 2nd year of middle school children from two types of rural environment: farms and sites area placed on a district and a rural settlement area. It proposes that five children participate in each area, totalizing ten children. The method for construction of data provides for: conversation circle; drawings regarding the environment the children like the most; conversations based on photographs taken at the arrival of school transportation and the use of school environment. The analysis of the data will be made by individual and group aspects, with the goal to find elements that bring the children from the two areas together and what separates them.
